The most Popular Image sharing site, Imgur hacked back in 2014.This hack impacted about 1.7 million users.Imgur says no personally-identifying information such as real names or phone numbers was compromised.
The Incident took place 3 years ago.
Imgur, is the most popular image sharing site, which is also known as the hub of Viral images on Internet. The company stated that, A security researcher identified the breach 3 years ago and sent an email to the company on 23 November 2017 informing that he believes that he was sent information of Imgur users.
Confirming the breach, the company wrote, “While we are still actively investigating the intrusion, we wanted to inform you as quickly as possible as to what we know and what we are doing in response.”
Imgur says no personally-identifying information such as real names or phone numbers was compromised.Imgur identified the breach on Nov 24,17 and has started to notify the users by their registered email id.
The company says that they are still into the investigation how the incident happened, but they believes that “Database may have been cracked via bruteforcedue to an older hashing algorithm (SHA-256) that was used at the time.” But Imgur updated the algorithm to the new bcrypt algorithm last year.
The company also stated that it will be conducting a internal security audit of its systems. And they urged the users not to use the same password & email for multiple website on internet.
The Imgur news comes the day after UBER disclosed that breach took place last year. But the Imgur made it public as soon as it discovered about the breach instead of trying to cover the security breach by paying $100,000 to delete the stolen data to the Hacker.
